How does random video chat work? Three steps

Random video chat sounds technical, but from your side it is three actions. The matching and the video connection happen behind the scenes.

  1. 1. Tap Start Video ChatPress the button on any page. The lobby opens and your browser asks for camera and microphone access. Allow it once.
  2. 2. Get matchedStrangerCam looks for another person who is online and waiting, then connects the two of you one-to-one. This usually takes a few seconds.
  3. 3. Talk, or tap nextSay hello. If you like the chat, stay. If you do not, tap next and a new person appears. Report and block are on the same screen.
Video, audio, text

Pick Video, Audio or Text before you start

The lobby shows three match types. Video is the full experience. Audio drops the camera. Text drops both. They all use the same matching, so you can try each on a different night without learning anything new.

Not sure which fits? Our talk to strangers page compares them side by side, and the stranger chat page covers text in depth.

Phone or laptop

How to video chat with strangers on a phone or laptop

On a phone, hold it upright and use Chrome or Safari. On a laptop, any recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari works. Either way there is nothing to install, and closing the tab ends your session.

A few small things make chats better. Face a light source instead of sitting in front of one. Raise the screen so the camera is at eye level. Use headphones to stop echo. If the connection stutters, switch to audio for a minute.

Free and coins

What is free, and what uses coins

Your first match is free and there are free matches every day. Longer or premium sessions can use coins, which you buy in the wallet if you want them. The free video chat page has the full breakdown.

You never need coins to skip, report or block, and you are never charged without going through checkout.

Leaving

Leaving, reporting and coming back

Tap next to move on, or close the tab to stop. If someone broke the rules, report them first. After that you can start again immediately.

The safety tips page explains what to watch for, and the help center has answers if something does not work as described here.

First match

If your first match does not go as planned

The first match is often the strangest. The person may be quiet, may leave quickly, or the video may take a moment to load. None of that is a sign something is broken. Tap next and try again.

If you wait more than a minute without a match, tap Start again and check your connection. Audio and text can match faster than video when few people are online. And if the camera never turns on, work through the steps in the help center.

Closing

What happens when you close the tab

Closing the tab or leaving the page ends your current chat. You can come back and start another match whenever you like. If you were using a free match, the Try a Free Match screen shows how many you have left today, and the count resets daily.
